Other measures the developer could consider as punishment for RWT activity are set to include wealth removal - basically taking away gains made by accounts of players at the server level. Also, possible bans.
RuneScape's PvP element, called the Duel Arena, will also be subject to stricter rules. Jagex affirms that the mode "has been a source of this kind of shady behavior" and that 38 percent of the bans for RWT games to date come from that aspect of the game. It says that already amounts approximately "thousands of bans every month".
As a result, the developer seems to be choosing the nuclear alternative, saying "we're planning in the long run to eliminate the Duel Arena out of RuneScape entirely." In the meantime it will put in place "some short-term measures" to clean up PvP "until our development teams are able to deliver an overhaul that completely will replace the Duel Arena next year."
The rules will have a limit to the total amount GP (or gold points) that players can bet on an event in the Duel Arena. Players can wager "no over 50m GP for each duel". Further rules haven't been described as of yet.
Jagex states that "a brand-new experience that will make up part of the Elder God Wars storyline" will replace Duel Arena in early 2022 But no other details have been provided yet.
While the full impact of these changes has yet to be seen the effects of these changes are the most robust measures any studio has implemented in order to protect against external misuse of its system for monetary gain. If they succeed, similar actions could be seen in the MMO space in the coming years.
Jagex have announced, after 18 years as the main PvP battleground, Duel Arena will be ending its presence in RuneScape and a brand new area will be added. RuneScape is set to release Het's Oasis that will have a brand new landscape, new skilling methods and two mini-quests you can try.
