After people get bored and they begin to find the strings behind the Skinner Box, the illusion is broken and the games are no fun. People play them not so much because they are entertaining but since they are addictive for reasons similar to why slot machines are addictive. Having some"carrot on a stick" mechanics isn't always a bad thing, but it most certainly is when that's all your game has going for it that is unfortunately the case for the majority of the MMMORPG genre. The truth is that people still play Runescape is not performing the genre any favors.
